SO UNBELIEVABLE;Michail Antonio announces his resignation due to injury

West Ham are planning an amazing gesture for Michail Antonio after the striker broke his leg in a car crash that rules him out for the entire season.

The 34-year-old was involved in a crash on Saturday afternoon (7 December) that led him to having surgery on a lower limb fracture. The club confirmed the striker was monitored in hospital.

He has been with the club for almost a decade, and supporters have called for them to “look after him for life”.

Despite his contract running until the summer 2025, the Hammers look set to extend his stay by offering a new deal.

West Ham look to extend Michail Antonio deal

The Times has reported that the East London club are considering the Jamaica international’s contract beyond its expiry date and are planning to hold talks once he is out of hospital.

Although he earns £90,000-a-week for the rest of the year, the club reportedly do not have insurance for the current circumstances and are committed to paying out his contract.

The striker will be out of action beyond the conclusion of his current terms, making this a generous gesture from the club.

The Hammers have form in this area, supporting players through injuries beyond their immediate obligations. In November 2021, Angelo Ogbonna suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury that would have kept him out for the season. Despite his contract expiring that term, the club decided to extend it “to aid his recovery” [The Athletic].

A club treating players with respect, rather than merely fulfilling commitments, reflects an admirable culture at West Ham.

Players past and present have also shown their gratitude to the number nine, further illustrating his importance within the group.
