TRADE PROPOSAL: Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 1st-Round Edge, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka sent to 49ers for Late-Round Pick

The San Francisco 49ers are heading into the regular season with several notable injuries, particularly on defense.

Linebacker Dee Winters is dealing with a knee injury, while safety Talanoa Hufanga, who recently came off the Physically Unable to Perform list after recovering from an ACL tear, is working his way back to full strength. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw will start the season on the PUP list, and defensive tackle Kalia Davis is on injured reserve.

Additionally, pass rushers Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos both sustained knee injuries during the preseason, though neither is thought to be serious.

Alex Kay of Bleacher Report suggested a trade that could benefit the San Francisco 49ers, given their defensive injury concerns. He proposed that the 49ers trade a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.

Kay highlighted the potential need for additional edge depth due to knee injuries to Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos, noting that while Nick Bosa remains a key asset, acquiring a young talent like Tryon-Shoyinka could strengthen the defensive rotation significantly.

Tryron-Shoyinka, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 260 pounds, was drafted in the first round (32nd overall) by the Bucs in 2021. In his first three seasons, he appeared in 51 games and started 34 of them.

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

In 2023, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka had a strong season, playing all 17 games (12 starts) and setting career highs with 45 tackles, 7 tackles-for-loss, and 5.0 sacks. Over the past three years, he has recorded 31 quarterback hits, showcasing his ability to disrupt plays.

However, Tryon-Shoyinka is entering the final year of his rookie deal after the Buccaneers declined his fifth-year option. Despite his impressive stats, he has been overshadowed by Yaya Diaby and faces competition from rookie Chris Braswell, making him a potential trade candidate.

Alex Kay suggested that the 49ers could acquire Tryon-Shoyinka for a sixth-round pick, a move that could be valuable given their current roster constraints and limited cap space. Adding Tryon-Shoyinka for just over $2 million on a one-year deal could strengthen the 49ers’ edge rotation and bolster their chances for another deep playoff run. GM John Lynch might find this a worthwhile investment.
