Defending champions Italy were eliminated from Euro 2024 after Switzerland delivered an outstanding performance, winning 2-0 in Berlin to advance to the quarter-finals.
Switzerland, who were impressive in the group stage and missed the top spot in Group A only due to a last-minute Germany equalizer, quickly took control of this last-16 match. They dominated possession and pushed a lackluster Italy back.
The opening goal was unsurprising as Remo Freuler made a run into the box and scored past Gianluigi Donnarumma with a slight deflection.
Italy needed a strong response after a poor first half but instead conceded again within 30 seconds of the restart. Nicolo Fagioli lost the ball, and Ruben Vargas capitalized with a stunning finish into the top corner.
The Azzurri came close to getting back into the game twice, with Fabian Schar heading against his own post and Gianluca Scamacca hitting the woodwork from close range. However, the Italian side did not improve enough.
Switzerland secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Euros for only the second time and will next face either England or Slovakia.
