St Helen’s treasured cricket memories

St Helen's memorable cricketing moments

One of the most historic and recognizable sports stadiums in Wales is St Helen’s in Swansea, which first opened its doors in 1875.

American football has even been contested there, along with boxing, cycling, hockey, tennis, and hockey.

It has a special role in cricket history as the site of Wales’ first-ever home rugby international in 1882.

Nevertheless, cricket’s 150-year connection to the field overlooking Swansea Bay may come to an end as the Ospreys rugby team is thinking of making St Helen’s or the Brewery Field in Bridgend their new home starting in the 2025–2026 season.

Some of the best cricketing moments witnessed at St Helen’s are recalled by BBC Sport Wales.

The final day of August 1968 marked St Helen’s induction into cricket mythology.

In a first-class cricket match, Glamorgan was playing Nottinghamshire when Sir Garfield Sobers, the visiting captain, became the first batsman to knock six sixes in one over.

When Malcolm Nash, a Welsh bowler, was given the ball and the mission of halting the renowned West Indian all-round player, Nottinghamshire and Sobers had reached 358-5.
