Following Manchester United’s defeat by Arsenal, club veteran Rio Ferdinand acknowledged that he is concerned that five stars don’t “fit” into Ruben Amorim’s favored system.
After attracting interest from West Ham and Liverpool in the summer, Amorim was named last month to succeed Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.
Amorim had a big job at Old Trafford because the Red Devils were in 13th place in the Premier League when he came over.
Prior to their journey to the Emirates to play Arsenal, Manchester United had won three straight games under the 39-year-old.
Arsenal was always going to be a tougher challenge because United had already played Ipswich Town, Bodo-Glimt, and Everton. Amorim’s team was duly defeated 2-0.
The visitors had trouble handling Arsenal’s corners, and they won 2-0 thanks to goals from William Saliba and Jurrien Timber. With this outcome, Manchester United is now seven points outside of the Champions League spots and in 11th place in the Premier LeIn light of this outcome, Ferdinand has selected five players who might not “fit” Amorim’s preferred style of play.
“I’m concerned about our players’ ability to meet Amorim’s demands,” Ferdinand said.
You glance at Rashford and then at Garnacho. Will they be successful at an inside forward position, and can they fit into that position?
Hojlund, Rasmus. He will be our [Viktor] Gyokeres; will he be someone we can manipulate?
Zirkzee and Anthony haven’t yet demonstrated that they both fit within the system. What role will he play in all of this?
“We don’t seem to have the cohesiveness up there, so I think there is more work to be done and more urgently in the forward areas,” he added.
Paul Parker, a former Manchester United defender, believes Hojlund “fits” Amorim’s approach “much better than Zirkzee does” and is “very similar” to Viktor Gyokeres. I think Hojlund is a far better fit for this system than Zirkzee. Hojlund is the workhorse Amorim needs up front, according to Parker.
