Spain midfielder Mikel Merino’s heartfelt celebration following his decisive goal against Germany at Euro 2024 was a tribute to his father, Angel.
Merino scored with a header in the 119th minute, eliminating the tournament hosts in a dramatic finish, and then ran to the corner flag at Stuttgart Arena. There, he circled around it, snapped his fingers, and looked skyward. This gesture was revealed to be inspired by his father, who had celebrated similarly during his own playing career.
Angel, a former LaLiga player, had performed the same celebration at the very same stadium. In 1991, Merino Sr. scored for Osasuna, securing a 2-0 lead against Stuttgart in the UEFA Cup second round, with his team ultimately winning 3-2.
Thirty-three years later, his son leaped above Antonio Rudiger to connect with Lamine Yamal’s precise cross, sending a header past the stationary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Merino has a special connection to this venue, having made his international debut for Spain there in a 1-1 draw with Germany four years prior to his remarkable late goal.
After securing Spain’s place in the semifinals, Merino said, “I’m exhausted. The adrenaline is hitting me hard. It was an extraordinary moment. Scoring in the 119th minute was incredible, but it was a team effort. To be tied at 90 minutes is tough, but we deserved this win. It was a highly anticipated match between two of the world’s best teams, a game fit for a Euros or World Cup final. We know how to endure, and we have an excellent team. There’s something special about this stadium for us. My father scored here, and I made my debut here.”
Spain is set to play France next, following Les Bleus’ penalty shootout victory over Portugal last night.
