Against Crystal Palace on Saturday, Myles Lewis-Skelly of Arsenal put on a fantastic performance that had pundit Jamie Carragher question his age.
On Saturday, Myles Lewis-Skelly started for Arsenal for the second time in a row in the Premier League, coming in ahead of Kieran Tierney, Riccardo Calafiori, and Jakub Kiwior, who were all on the bench.
An observer might have questioned that choice because of Lewis-Skelly’s inexperience and youth. But after seeing the child in action, any skeptics would have immediately changed their minds.
Lewis-Skelly played 58 minutes of the game, completed 18 of 19 passes that were attempted, earned two free kicks and five of seven duels, and completed his lone dribble attempt. However, those figures don’t provide the whole picture.
Lewis-Skelly’s composure was crucial since Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba were enjoying a rare off-day in possession. And it was amazing that he managed to keep Arsenal in possession so much given the pressure Palace put on him.
When Calafiori is fully recovered, it is still anticipated that he would return to the team. The Italian international contributed to the outcome by playing 32 minutes in the Palace match and helping Declan Rice.
Lewis-Skelly won’t necessarily expect to play left-back indefinitely because he is a midfielder by trade.
The good news is that Arsenal doesn’t have to risk another injury setback by bringing Calafiori back into the lineup. When called upon, Lewis-Skelly is demonstrating that they have a formidable alternative.
