The Dallas Mavericks are trading Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round draft picks to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for guard Quentin Grimes, according to ESPN on Friday.

This trade allows the Mavericks to get younger and gain more financial flexibility.

Hardaway, 32, is owed $16.2 million for the 2024-25 season, which is the final year of his four-year, $75 million contract. Grimes, 24, will earn $4.3 million next season, the last year of his rookie contract.

During the 2023-24 regular season, Hardaway averaged 14.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 79 games, starting 12 of them. In the playoffs, he contributed 4.4 points and 1.8 rebounds across 14 games, helping the Mavericks reach the NBA Finals. Over his career, Hardaway has averaged 14.0 points and 2.9 rebounds in 736 games (345 starts), playing for the New York Knicks (2013-15, 2017-19), Atlanta Hawks (2015-17), and Mavericks (2019-24). He has made 1,676 career 3-pointers with a 36.0-percent shooting rate.

Grimes joined the Pistons in a February 8 trade with the Knicks and played in only six games for Detroit, averaging 5.3 points and 2.3 assists. Over his career, Grimes has averaged 8.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 168 games (90 starts) with the Knicks (2021-24) and Pistons.
