Giles in: Middlesbrough's preferred starting lineup vs Swansea City on August 10

On the first day of the 24/25 Championship season, Middlesbrough will play Swansea City.

Michael Carrick, the manager of Boro, will be hoping—indeed, expecting—that his team would get off to a far quicker start than they did the previous year, since they managed just two points from their first seven league games.

After those first seven games of the season, the club was languishing at the bottom of the Championship, and neither Carrick nor the Boro supporters knew what Middlesbrough’s best team looked like.

In the present, the players that signed but had slow starts to their Boro careers have mostly developed into valuable assets, and it appears much easier to put together the best team for Boro.

Seny Dieng, a Senegalese international, was Middlesbrough’s first-choice custodian going into the new season. He did well enough in his first season to hold the starting job for 2024–2025.

Carrick wants his keeper to be able to play out from the back with assurance and ease, and the former QPR shotstopper definitely fits that description, sometimes to his detriment during the previous campaign.

In the preseason, Tom Glover will compete with Sol Brynn and Zach Hemming, two of Boro’s potential young goalkeepers, for the backup position. Glover was unable to make an impression on the 29-year-old.
