Gary O’Neil announced Wolves’ change following the issue against West Ham United.

Following the full-time altercation involving Mario Lemina and Jarrod Bowen against West Ham United, Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has declared that Lemina is no longer captain of his team.

Lemina and Bowen argued over the Wolves player’s unwillingness to shake hands at the final whistle of the Hammers’ pivotal 2-1 victory at the London Stadium [9 December], and the visitors’ assistant Shaun Derry had to hold him back on the field.

O’Neil, a former Irons player, gave the news during his press conference prior to Wolves’ match against Ipswich Town.

O’Neil stated: “We can’t see the scenes at West Ham, but I get on well with Mario,” as reported on X by Liam Keen of the Express & Star [December 13]. We hold each other in the highest regard.

“Mario is alright; it was just a talk. It was a talk that had to be had, but it was started the other night. We’ve dealt with it and are now moving forward

Wolves’ captain is changed due to the West Ham controversy.

In his remarks, O’Neil suggests that Wolves was supposed to talk to Lemina about the long-term captaincy anyhow, but Monday was probably the only day that mattered.
