Hugh Freeze continues to support his chosen quarterback, Payton Thorne, as he prepares to lead the Auburn football offense. With two weeks remaining before the Tigers face Alabama A&M, Freeze provided an encouraging update on Thorne’s understanding of the offensive system developed by him and offensive coordinator
Derrick Nix.Freeze remarked on August 16, “We’re completely different from last year. Since spring, his comprehension of what is expected from him has improved significantly. He demonstrates many commendable traits on the field. While he may not always execute perfectly, he is thinking correctly. This growth comes from the repetitions and discussions we have to clarify what I want from each play in various situations”

In 2023, Thorne found himself in an uncomfortable situation, contending with an offensive coordinator whom Freeze did not connect with, as well as an associate head coach, Cadillac Williams, who was widely recognized as wanting the head coach position following a successful interim role in 2022.
In 2024, he has every advantage at his disposal: complete backing from Freeze, no direct competition for the starting quarterback position, and the most skilled group of receivers that Tiger fans have witnessed in years, if not decades.The former Michigan State standout has no room for excuses in 2024. If he isn’t guiding a 5-0 team or a 4-1 squad by the end of September, a difficult discussion about the latter half of the season will be necessary.
