Despite suffering a severe ankle sprain, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes intends to play against the Texans on Saturday.

Kansas City, Missouri — Unless his injured ankle puts the two-time MVP in a situation where he is unable to defend himself or he “puts the football team in a bad position,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is getting ready to play against Houston on Saturday.

Late in Sunday’s 21-7 victory in Cleveland, Mahomes suffered a minor high-ankle injury. Even though the majority of the squad was given the day off, he started receiving treatment on the plane journey home—“I wasn’t do high-knees or anything like that,” he joked—and spent almost 12 hours on Monday getting extra work done on it at the practice facility.

Carson Wentz was present to support Mahomes when he returned to the practice field on Tuesday

You don’t want to venture out and endanger yourself. It’s football. There will be blows to you. However, Mahomes stated, “you want to be able to protect yourself.” Additionally, I don’t want to restrict the strategy. I want to have mobility in the pocket.

Mahomes has a wealth of knowledge regarding ankle problems. He suffered a more severe one against the Jaguars in the 2022 playoffs after suffering a similar one against Jacksonville in Week 1 of the 2019 season. He was unable to stop the game in that instance, but he received enough medical attention to play in the Super Bowl against Philadelphia and the AFC championship game against Cincinnati.

It was worse in Jacksonville. Mahomes stated, “That one was pretty significant.”

Two years ago, Mahomes did not have the luxury of time. He could theoretically miss a game or two if it meant being healthy for the postseason, given the Chiefs have already secured the AFC West championship and a postseason berth.
