Why, despite his accomplishments, Devin Vassell shouldn’t be back in the starting lineup

The San Antonio Spurs’ season has been marred by injuries; guard Devin Vassell has already missed 15 games. He has been playing exceptionally well off the bench while he recovers from injury, averaging 16 points in 24.7 minutes per game and shooting an incredible 40% from three-point range.

Vassell could score more points and contribute to the team’s offensive success with greater playing time. However, interim coach Mitch Johnson should stick with Vassell in the second unit even though it is anticipated that he will return to the starting lineup.

Why? The Spurs’ starting lineup, which includes Chris Paul, Stephon Castle, Julian Champagnie, Harrison Barnes, and Victor Wembanyama, has performed admirably together, which has contributed to the problem.

That team has enough shooting around their star player, and they don’t have any obvious defensive weaknesses. It goes without saying that having a great starting lineup is advantageous, but San Antonio may also have a strong bench.

Devin Vassell must continue to be used off the bench by the Spurs.
Tre Jones, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan, and Charles Bassey would make up one of the NBA’s top second units. Two of the Spurs’ top three players are undoubtedly Vassell and Sochan, although Sochan and Wembanyama

The fact that the second unit has had terrible shooting and has hurt those lineups is another advantage of having Vassell come off the bench. Vassell should continue to score against second units when Wembanyama is off the court because of his excellent shooting.

That occurred during the Spurs’ thrilling victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. Vassell was able to maintain the offensive momentum even with Wembanyama on the sideline. San Antonio should therefore continue to use him in the second unit.
