When ‘target’ sustains a “serious” injury in the season opener, will Chelsea turn elsewhere?

After Goncalo Ramos, Chelsea's rumored transfer target, suffered a serious ankle injury in Paris Saint-Germain's opening Ligue 1 match, the club may need to look elsewhere for a new striker.

The 23-year-old Portugal international made 40 appearances for Les Parisiens in all competitions last season, scoring 11 goals and dishing out two assists.

Ramos was acquired by PSG from Benfica in the January transfer window for an estimated £57 million plus add-ons. His contract with PSG is set to expire in the summer of 2028.

The Blues have already added ten players this summer, but they are still being linked to a number of elite strikers, such as Ramos, Victor Osimhen of Napoli, and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Evan Ferguson.

However, after playing just 20 minutes in the Ligue 1 champions’ opening game of the season, it appears that the Blues will now have to cross the Portuguese international off their transfer wishlist.after playing just 20 minutes in the opening game of the 2024–25 season for the Ligue 1 champions.

After setting up Lee Kang-in for the game’s first goal just three minutes into the new season, Ramos had a strong start for Les Parisiens against Le Havre. It was his first goal contribution of the new campaign.

But, before the first period’s halfway point, the 23-year-old forward was taken down by Etienne Youte Kinkoue’s ill-advised tackle, which limited his ability to continue having an impact on the match.

Despite the fact that PSG won the game 4-1 thanks to three more goals from Bradley Barcola, Randal Kolo Muani, and Ousmane Dembele, Luis Enrique was clearly worried about the severity of his center-forward’s injury.

During his post-match press conference, Enrique was asked about Ramos’ injury. He said,

“I don’t know for sure, but it seems like a serious situation.

“It’s serious; I’m not sure how many weeks he will be out injured,” stated transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Additionally, pictures from multiple news sources showed Ramos leaving the stadium with a protective boot on.

Unfortunately for PSG, Enrique was right when he first noticed Ramos’s injury; the team announced on Saturday that the striker will need ankle surgery and will be out for the next three months.Chelsea 'target' suffers

The French giants, who have yet to replace the enormous void left by Kylian Mbappe’s departure to Real Madrid earlier this summer, will surely be severely harmed by the news.

In addition to being without two first-team regulars—Nuno Mendes is suspended and Fabian Ruiz is not yet ready to play after helping Spain win the European Championship—Les Parisiens have not yet made any high-profile additions to replace Mbappe. After Ramos’s injury was confirmed, some players were reportedly placed on high alert, including Nigerian international Victor Osimhen.Victor Osimhen wants to leave Napoli - YouTube

The forward for Napoli informed his club that he wanted to leave this summer, and before the season began, he was strongly linked to both a move to Stamford Bridge and the French capital.

Given that Ramos is now probably going to miss the rest of the year, PSG might have to bring in a replacement during this transfer window, which might rekindle their interest in Osimhen, who is rumored to be eager to move.

Due to the Portuguese international’s injury, Chelsea may decide to focus on other transfer targets in order to make a move for Osimhen before the transfer window closes.
