Following US President-elect Donald Trump’s refusal to rule out military action to seize Greenland, Germany declared that boundaries cannot be altered by force.
Denmark, a member of the EU and NATO, has autonomy over the large Arctic island.
What France and Germany said
“As always, the firm principle applies… that borders must not be moved by force,” stated Steffen Hebestreit, a spokesman for the German government, citing international accords including the UN Charter.
Hebestreit declined to comment on whether Trump’s threats against Denmark were taken seriously in Berlin.
Hebestreit said at a routine press conference, “I don’t want to assess” the remarks, adding only that the German government had “taken note” of them.
Additionally, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot insisted that Trump refrain from endangering the European Union’s.
Regarding Greenland, what has Trump said?
Trump said Monday that he wants the United States to occupy Greenland and the Panama Canal, but he did not rule out military or economic measures.
“No, I am unable to guarantee you either of those two. But when asked, Trump responded, “I can say this: we need them for economic security.”
Following his father’s suggestion that Greenland should join the United States, Donald Trump Jr. traveled there on Tuesday.
“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if and when it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!” President-elect Donald Trump announced his plans for Greenland and his joy over his son’s trip on his own social media platform, Truth Social. He claims that Greenland is vital to US national security and has threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark if it rejects his offer to buy it.
