David Beckham attended the funeral of a former Manchester United legend on Monday along with a few of his old teammates.
Alongside United greats Sir Alex Ferguson, Roy Keane, and John O’Shea, the 49-year-old former England captain paid their respects to Kath Phipps, who served as United’s receptionist for 55 years.
Phipps became a vital member of the United staff and community after joining the team in 1968, the year they won their first European Cup.
She was used by England World Cup winners Nobby Stiles and Sir Bobby Charlton, as well as managers Sir Alex, Sir Matt Busby, Ron Atkinson, and, more recently, Jose Mourinho.
Phipps, a lifelong United supporter who was born in Irlam, Salford, passed away last December at the age of 85 following seven decades of service to her beloved side.
The whole current United squad assembled at Manchester Cathedral on Monday to give Phipps the farewell she earned for her many years of devotion.
David and other former United players gathered for the event, accompanied by teammates Nicky Butt and Roy Keane, who won the treble in 1999.
Wearing a long black coat over a black suit with a white shirt and black tie, David’s outfit was appropriately subdued for the day.
Between the time David arrived at United as a 15-year-old in 1991 and his departure for Real Madrid in 2003, Phipps met him at the training site virtually every morning.
When Phipps passed away, David recalled her with affection and gave her credit for taking care of him when he first came to Manchester while still a student.
