Celtics’ Joe Mazzulla penalized $35,000 for ‘forcefully approaching’ referee following defeat to Chicago.

Joe Mazzulla felt annoyed. The whole Celtics squad was upset with both the referees and themselves following a 117-108 defeat to the Chicago Bulls, but it was Mazzulla who went overboard and needed to be held back after the game.

The league announced Saturday that Mazzulla was fined $35,000 for “aggressively pursuing and directing inappropriate language toward a game official” due to that outburst. Mazzulla had already received a technical in the game — as had Jaylen Brown — when they contended that a loose ball that turned into a jump ball between Ayo Dosunmu and Payton Pritchard should have had Brown participating. The authorities had differing views, leading to disputes. That penalty is more reasonable than a suspension, which might have been considered.

The highlight of this was Mazzulla’s reply when questioned about pursuing the official after the game.

“I hadn’t come across him for some time.” “Therefore, simply wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays… one must not miss a chance to extend best wishes to them and their loved ones,” Mazzulla stated. Nicely executed.

Those decisions were also not the cause of the Celtics losing the game. Leading the list is Boston, making 14-of-56 (25%) from beyond the arc for the evening. When a team attempts numerous 3-pointers like the Celtics, it leads to unpredictable games and occasional poor performances.
