Canadian international winger Liam Millar has signed with Hull City, a club in England’s second-tier Championship, moving from Swiss Super League team FC Basel. The 24-year-old has agreed to a three-year contract with an option for an additional year.

Liam Millar wants Preston to adopt Canada mentality at Leicester City

Last season, Millar was on loan at Preston North End, another Championship team, where he scored five goals and provided five assists in 36 matches. Originally from Toronto, Millar recorded 13 goals and 10 assists in 98 appearances for Basel, following his transfer from Liverpool in July 2021.

“I am very happy to be here,” Millar shared on Hull City’s website, acknowledging the lengthy process to finalize the deal. While he enjoyed his time at Basel, he felt ready to return to England and continue proving his abilities. He has expressed a strong desire to play in the Premier League.

Millar, who has earned 32 caps for Canada and played in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, joins a Hull team that finished seventh in the Championship last season, narrowly missing the promotion playoffs by three points. The club appointed German coach Tim Walter, who previously worked with Bayern Munich’s youth and reserve teams and managed Hamburg, as head coach in May.

Millar moved to England with his father at nearly 13 years old to pursue a soccer career. After initially joining Fulham, he moved to Liverpool’s academy in 2016, where he advanced through the youth ranks and captained the U23s. He made his senior debut for Liverpool in February 2020 in an FA Cup match against Shrewsbury Town at Anfield.

With two young daughters, Millar’s return to England with Preston allowed him and his wife Daniela, who hails from Oakville, Ontario, to have better support nearby. His parents both work in the TV and film industry; his mother is a makeup artist with credits including the new “Dune” franchise and “Priscilla,” while his father is an electrician who worked on several seasons of “Game of Thrones.”

At 10 or 11 years old, Millar was cut from a tryout for Toronto FC’s academy.

Hull City, founded in 1904, is owned by Turkish entrepreneur Acun Ilıcalı, a producer known for Turkish TV shows like “Survivor,” “The Voice,” and “MasterChef.”
