The fight for the establishment of Nigeria Students came into existence with the creation of the West African Students Union (WASU) under the leadership of Ladipo Solanke in 1925 and in 1945 University College Ibadan brought about the National Union of Nigerian Students (NUNS) which replaced WASU.

The long awaited election result of the National Association of Nigerian Student’s (NANS), has on Saturday been made know as the mantle of leadership of the union is to be bestowed on Comrade Lawal Umar Faruk an icon of Ahmadu Bello University, as the winner.

Com. Lawal is from the north-west zone which is in line with the zoning agreements of the union (NANS) as presidency is meant to rotate across the newly mapped out six (6) zones

Asefon’ Speech: When i assumed office, one of the promises i made is to ensure that i leave NANS better than i met it. My administration initiated and institutionalized the electoral reforms. ” Let me congratulate the NANS President-Elect in the person of, Comrade Lawal Umar Faruk for earning the mandate of the Nigerian students in a very free and fair election”.

In the same vein, i congratulate Comrade Adediwura Adeshina for returning as the Senate President of NANS. Institutional reforms are the bedrock upon which transformational progress is built, he added.

He went on to note “We reformed the system through a constitutional amendment and made accreditation impossible for ineligible voters and for the first time in our recent history we conducted a rancor-free election and not a single bullet was shot on the air as against past experienced where hoodlums shoot bullets at will.

Unionism is like building a tower, some will lay the foundation while the others will build on it. ” He then urged the just elected leadership led by Comrade Umar Faruk to continue to fight for the emancipation and improved welfare and administration of Nigerian students while taking his rightful place in the nation’s polity. Congratulations Sir and thank you all”.

Comrade Lawal, while addressing the public during his election victory held at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja promised the Nigerian Student’s that his leadership will engage Federal Government, The Academic Staff Union of Universities on a resume to end the ongoing asuu strike

He went ahead to say that NANS will seize to indulge in partisan politics but will henceforth ensure the safety of lives and properties within all Nigerian schools and the nation at wide

Furthermore, while expressing his joy, he went on to thank Nigerian students who showed him love and support throughout the election period which contributed to his victory and promised concretely never to let them down

He also stated that posterity will not forgive him if he fails to appreciate and express his profound gratitude to Allah (God Almighty) who has been with him since the election began, The well recognized and esteemed senators of the Student union and other caliber of men who firmly stood by him regardless of all hurdles that arose.

Comrade Lawal, still speaking made mention of certain destructive measures that was put up during the election to sabotage it such as: Oppression of students, act to buy students votes, and many other orchestrated vicious plans which tends inimical to the existence of the organization.

Despite, all that was planned the numerous and genuineness of the students and NANS Senator’s support he got at the end was massive and has placed him in the position as NANS president elect, light has defeated all darkness
